How to Recommit to Your Resolutions With a Mid Year Review

Half year resolutions?


We’ve made it through the first half of the year. If your family is half as chaotic as mine, your personal (or family or business) goals for the year may have taken a back seat to the daily chaos of running your family.


Whether you crushed all your new years goals, or you’re revisiting them now that you can take a step back and breathe during the summer, here are a few tips to crush the last half of the year!


  1. Review your January goals.

  2. Write down all the things you’ve accomplished towards those goals.

  3. Decide if you want to make new goals or continue to work on the goals from January

  4. Make a new action plan to achieve the goals in the next 6 months

  5. Reward yourself for being awesome


Review your January goals

You had the best of intentions when you woke from your champagne induced slumber somewhere around January 2nd. Then life happened and you forgot to follow through with that workout plan or your weekly budget meeting with your partner. Now that the new year is halfway over, it’s time to review those goals. Maybe you find your newly motivated, older and wiser self can recommit to the goals of your enthusiastic January self.


Write down everything you DID accomplish towards those goals

Chances are you did make some headway on your resolutions. Maybe you tracked your water intake for a few weeks, or set a basic budget. Maybe you decluttered a few drawers or your massive Imelda Marcos worthy shoe collection. Write it down. You might be surprised at how much you actually accomplished back in those focused days of motivation!


Decide if you want to make new goals or continue the goals you set in January

Now that you’ve lived another 6 months, those January goals may not be as important to you. Or maybe they’re more important that ever because you’re six months closer to ANOTHER new year. Were you trying to lose 20 pounds and haven’t seen the scale move? Trying to pay down some debt but find that you haven’t seen progress? Maybe that file cabinet is still full to the brim with tax documents from 15 years ago. If it’s still important to you, then stick with it. If those old goals don’t light a fire in you like they did when that clock struck 12, skip them and give yourself the grace to move on.


Make a new action plan to achieve your goals in the next 6 months

So, you decided to recommit to your goals for the next 6 months. Fantastic! If you didn’t make headway on those goals in the first 6 months, what can you do differently this time?  Made some progress but fizzled out a few weeks into the year? Take an honest look at what got in the way of achieving those goals and decide what you could do differently this time. Maybe you just need accountability. Enlist an accountability partner! Do you need to sustain your progress by making it a habit? Attach the actions you develop to an already established routine - like a morning routine - and watch your progress reach new levels!

Did you decide to let go of those old goals (or maybe you already achieved them, good for you!) and you’re ready to make new goals? Make sure you attach an action plan to those goals so you can achieve them with time to spare and the ability to enjoy the festivities of the end of the year holiday season. YOU’VE GOT THIS!


Reward yourself

Half the fun of setting goals is celebrating benchmarks along the journey. What kinds of things do you do to reward your accomplishments?  Maybe it’s a date night with your partner, or a mani/pedi with your bestie. Maybe you buy a new pair of running shoes for your new workout routines. Whatever the reward, make sure it motivates you and keeps you on track. In other words, don’t go buy a Louis Vuitton purse if you’re trying to get out of debt, or splurge on a buffet if you’re trying to lose weight. Keep the mindset that you WILL achieve your goals by the end of the year and the second half of the year will be your best 6 months ever!!
